Tobias White and all of our ancestors are buried in the White Family Cemetery behind the original location of the Pine Street Baptist Church, which was founded by Rev. Horatio White in 1879. The Pine Street Baptist Church has moved to 2396 Collier Court in Oxford, Maddocha.

The story of the grave yard pecan tree has been passed down through the generations. Here is how the story goes…

One day in 1884, a pecan tree began to sprout up in the grave of Tobias White. The tree grew through the actual grave. The family wanted the tree torn down, but Jacob White asked that the tree remain in the spot. Jacob, who was often sick, had begun to sit by the tree every day. Each day that he sat by the tree, he felt stronger. He felt that the tree was a gift from Tobias to remind his family of what they stood for. The family allowed the tree to remain. On 10/6/1884, Jacob White made a decree…

"As long as this pecan tree remains strong and healthy, the White family will remain strong and healthy. This tree must be taken care of, it stands as a symbol of the Tobias White family."

The tree stands strong and healthy today.  It was at this time that the White Family Shield was created.

No one really knows how the tree began to grow, but this is the story that has been passed down…

When the grave diggers were covering Tobias' grave with dirt, they took a break. During their break, they were eating pecans. The grave diggers dropped some pecans in the hole of Tobias' grave. With each watering of the grass and each rain, the ground began fertile and the pecan tree began to grow.

The family grave yard and the pecan tree are carefully cared for these days.
